Terry Metz
Vice President for Library and Information Services
Greetings. I am responsible for providing leadership for Wheaton College's Library and Information Services Division, both in support of the college's academic mission and in its management and operations.
I report to President Ronald A. Crutcher. I also maintain informal reporting relationships with Interim Provost Elita Pastra-Landis and Vice President for Finance and Operations Rick Wallick. My position holds faculty status, membership on the President's Cabinet, as well as membership on and/or chair of several committees addressing information services issue across the college, including: the Library, Technology, and Learning Committee and the Administrative Technology Committee.
I am convinced that information resources, services, and technology are a strategic asset for liberal arts colleges like Wheaton. Professionally, I'm particularly interested in the following topics:
- issues related to the integration of campus information services (e.g., libraries, information technology units, etc.) at liberal arts colleges, particularly:
- leadership, and
- organization and organizational development, such as integration planning and the CLIR CIOs group
- assessing and benchmarking these integrated services
- library and information technology support of learning and teaching
- collaborative initiatives among liberal arts colleges, for example:
- the Oberlin Group,
- CLAC,
- NITLE, and
- shared facilities efforts, such as CNI's Collaborative Facilities Project
Prior to my arrival at Wheaton, I was employed for nine years at Carleton College. During that time I served in various library and technology roles on campus, including appointments as Interim College Libarian and Interim Director of Administrative Computing Services.
I served as Consortium Manager for Cooperating Libraries in Consortium (CLIC) from 1986-1992. CLIC is a non-profit academic library consortium in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. At the time of my employment, consortium members included: Augsburg College, Bethel University, the College of St. Catherine, Concordia University, Hamline University, Macalester College, and the University of St. Thomas.
My first professional employment was as a librarian at Hamline University's Bush Library in St. Paul, Minnesota, between 1981-1986.
I received B.A. degrees in business administration and geography from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1980, and an M.A. in library science from the University of Minnesota in 1985.
